Exposure to just 2% of the body's surface area at a concentrated level is enough for hydrogen fluoride to be fatal, a figure sobering enough to make any safety engineer take notice. This is exactly why HF gas is classified among the most strictly controlled chemicals in the semiconductor, petroleum refining and metallurgy industries, where the HF gas detector becomes an indispensable layer of protection.

HF (HYDROGEN FLUORIDE) GAS AND ITS UNPREDICTABLE HAZARDS

HF, chemically known as hydrogen fluoride, CAS number 7664-39-3, is one of the most hazardous toxic and corrosive gases in the chemical industry, even though it is not flammable itself.

Key characteristics of HF:

  • Colorless under normal conditions, with a sharp, strongly irritating odor
  • Not flammable, but highly toxic and corrosive
  • Causes deep chemical burns that are slow to develop and difficult to detect at the moment of exposure; when dissolved in water or in contact with moisture, it causes tissue necrosis and bone destruction if not treated promptly
  • Occupational exposure limits set by both OSHA and NIOSH are 3 ppm as an 8 hour time weighted average
  • Reacts with most metals in the presence of moisture, generating flammable hydrogen gas, adding a secondary fire and explosion risk on top of its inherent toxicity

OVERVIEW OF HF (HYDROGEN FLUORIDE) GAS DETECTORS

An HF gas detector is a dedicated device used to detect the presence and measure the concentration of hydrogen fluoride gas in the air, typically expressed in ppm given that this toxic gas must be controlled at very low concentration levels.

In terms of working principle, most HF gas detectors on the market use electrochemical sensing technology. HF gas diffuses into the sensor chamber and undergoes an oxidation-reduction reaction at the electrode, generating an electrical current proportional to the gas concentration. This current signal is then converted by the processing unit into a concentration value, triggering an alarm once the configured threshold is exceeded.

Electrochemical technology is favored for HF gas detectors due to its high sensitivity at low ppm ranges, matching the very strict occupational exposure limits set for this gas. However, because of HF's strong corrosivity, the detector must be built with specialized materials and construction to withstand prolonged exposure to this gas without losing measurement accuracy.

THE MOST TYPICAL INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS OF HF (HYDROGEN FLUORIDE) GAS DETECTORS

In the petroleum refining industry, HF gas detectors are installed at alkylation units, where HF serves as a catalyst in the production of high octane gasoline. This is an area that carries both the risk of toxic HF leaks and secondary fire and explosion hazards due to the large volume of hydrocarbons processed simultaneously, which is why HF gas detectors are often paired with combustible gas detectors to fully cover the hazards present in the same area.

In the semiconductor industry, HF is used to etch silicon surfaces and clean wafers, meaning cleanrooms and chemical handling areas at chip manufacturing plants require continuous gas concentration monitoring to protect operating technicians.

In addition, HF gas detectors are applied at aluminum and fluorine compound production plants, uranium isotope separation and processing facilities, as well as glass and ceramics manufacturing units that use HF for surface etching or specialized cleaning processes.

PROSENSE - A LEADING GLOBALLY TRUSTED DISTRIBUTOR OF HF (HYDROGEN FLUORIDE) GAS DETECTOR

When choosing an HF gas detector, brand reputation, accuracy and long-term stability are factors that should be given top priority, particularly for a gas with such high toxicity and such strict occupational exposure limits. Prosense, a gas detector and automation equipment manufacturer from Turkey, is one of the brands that meets these requirements well, with its HF gas detector products applied across many industrial projects worldwide, including Vietnam.

Prosense's HF gas detectors are built on electrochemical sensing technology, engineered for stable operation and long service life under harsh industrial conditions. The devices are rated for good sensitivity at low ppm ranges, matching the early warning threshold required for HF gas, along with strong interference resistance that helps maintain measurement reliability during continuous monitoring.

In terms of system integration, Prosense's P Series detectors generally support common industrial signal output standards such as analog, relay or Modbus RTU RS485, making it easier to connect with a facility's existing PLC, SCADA or BMS system.

With a design built for harsh industrial environments, Prosense's HF gas detectors are well-suited for facilities requiring continuous 24/7 monitoring, such as chemical plants, petroleum refining units or production areas with high humidity.
