An addressable fire alarm system is one in which all fire and smoke detection devices in a system are connected and communicate both with each other and a central control monitoring location. This interconnectivity allows the control personnel to identify the location or “address” where the initial detection occurred.
Addressable system detectors use analogue sensor technology to detect an increase in heat or smoke in a room. This analogue data is then converted into digital data before being sent to the main control panel. This is required because control panel processors understand binary code, not analogue signals.
On a conventional panel, every device on the same circuit would report the same. The fire alarm control panel on an addressable system receives information and status reports from each device and indicates its exact location if there is smoke or fire.
An addressable fire panel is versatile and can be used in virtually any building. Because of their ability to be customized for any floorplan and their accuracy in pinpointing the exact location of a fire, an addressable fire panel is perfect for large buildings or buildings with a complex or intricate layout. Hotels, apartments, hospitals, or historic buildings are excellent candidates for addressable fire systems, but there's no limit on where an addressable system can be installed.
