OVERVIEW OF C8H10 AND THE C8H10 (XYLENE) GAS SENSOR
Xylene, with the chemical formula C8H10, is commonly found in industrial solvent products. It is a colorless liquid with a distinctive sweet odor, and its odor threshold is quite low, around 1 ppm, meaning people can typically detect the smell before the concentration reaches a hazardous level.
Xylene is flammable at room temperature, and its vapor is heavier than air, so it tends to accumulate in low lying areas or enclosed spaces with poor ventilation, increasing the risk of fire and explosion. In terms of health effects, exposure to high xylene concentrations causes irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, and affects the central nervous system, with symptoms such as headache, dizziness, loss of coordination, and drowsiness. In cases of severe exposure, it can lead to cardiac arrhythmia.
Because it carries both a fire and explosion hazard and an occupational health hazard, C8H10 gas sensors are installed at facilities that produce, store, or use xylene to detect leaks early, helping businesses proactively manage risk before an incident occurs. A xylene gas sensor operates continuously, measuring the gas concentration in the air in real time and issuing an alarm signal whenever the reading exceeds the configured safety threshold.
HOW THE C8H10 (XYLENE) GAS SENSOR WORKS
In explosion proof industrial xylene detectors, catalytic sensor technology, also known as a pellistor, is the most commonly used operating principle. The sensor consists of two elements heated to a stable operating temperature, one coated with a catalyst sensitive to combustible gas and the other serving as a reference element that does not react with the gas.
When xylene gas contacts the catalytic element, an oxidation reaction occurs and generates heat, which changes the electrical resistance of that element relative to the reference element. The resistance difference between the two elements is captured by the electronic circuit and converted into a gas concentration reading, expressed as a percentage of the lower explosive limit, commonly abbreviated as LEL. When the measured concentration exceeds the configured alarm threshold, the sensor sends a signal through a 4 to 20mA output or the RS 485 communication standard to the central control system, triggering a horn and strobe or interlocking with the ventilation system.
The advantage of the catalytic sensing principle lies in its high durability, its ability to operate reliably in harsh industrial environments, and its ability to achieve ATEX explosion proof certification, making it suitable for installation in hazardous area classifications such as Zone 1 or Zone 2.
BASIC CONSTRUCTION OF THE C8H10 (XYLENE) GAS SENSOR
An industrial xylene gas sensor typically consists of the following main components.
APPLICATIONS OF THE C8H10 (XYLENE) GAS SENSOR
Xylene is widely used as a solvent across many industries, which drives the need to install xylene gas sensors in the following areas.
Installing the right xylene gas sensor not only helps businesses comply with occupational safety regulations but also gives M&E contractors a solid basis for designing central gas alarm systems that meet the required standards for industrial facilities.
