A duct-mounted dew point sensor is a specialized device designed to measure relative humidity and calculate the dew point of air circulating inside air ducts. These sensors are commonly used in HVAC systems, centralized air conditioning, industrial ventilation, cold storage, and cleanroom environments.
By continuously monitoring the dew point within the air duct, the sensor helps detect condensation risks, thereby preventing mold growth, corrosion, and malfunctions in ventilation or air conditioning systems.
What is Dew Point and Why Measure It in Duct Systems?
The dew point is the temperature at which the moisture in the air begins to condense into liquid water. If the air temperature inside the duct falls below the dew point, condensation occurs, which can lead to:
Corrosion of metal ductwork and components
Mold formation inside air ducts
Reduced efficiency in heat exchange
Damage to electrical components, HVAC units, or AHUs
How Does a Duct Dew Point Sensor Work?
The sensor measures both temperature and relative humidity of the air inside the duct.
Using these two values, the device calculates the dew point with high accuracy.
Most sensors use capacitive humidity sensors and NTC or Pt1000 temperature sensors.
The probe is designed with a long insertion stem that extends directly into the airstream inside the duct to ensure precise readings.

Additional Technical Insights on Dew Point
The dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated with water vapor (100% relative humidity), causing water vapor to condense into liquid.
If the dew point is below freezing, it is referred to as the frost point, leading to frost or ice formation instead of condensation.
The dew point does not depend on the presence of other gases like oxygen or nitrogen—it is determined solely by the water vapor content.
When air temperature is higher than the dew point, water can evaporate into the air; when it is equal to or lower, condensation occurs.
Dew point is a more absolute indicator of moisture in the air than relative humidity.
