Duct smoke detectors are the first choice for detecting smoke in ventilation ducts in good time. A duct smoke detector demonstrates its qualities in building technology in particular, as it is equipped with a relay to take over the control centrally and automatically.

What are the qualities of duct smoke detectors?

A duct smoke detector is essential for early fire detection in ventilation and air conditioning ducts in buildings. The device uses sensors to quickly and efficiently detect smoke particles in the air flowing through the ducts. As soon as smoke is detected, the duct smoke detector triggers an alarm or automatically initiates a regulation process, such as closing an access, using the adapter system.

However, a duct smoke detector also ensures a quick manual response to possible fires or smoke developments before they can spread to other areas of the building. Their use is particularly important in larger building complexes with extensive ventilation systems to ensure the safety of people in the building and reduce property damage.

How does a duct smoke detector work?

A duct smoke detector continuously monitors the air flowing through the ventilation or air conditioning ducts of a building for smoke particles. To do this, it combines a classic smoke detector with an adapter system, whereby the measuring tube and the housing have been specially developed for the air flow. The optical sensors work with a light beam, usually a laser, which is guided through the duct air.

When smoke particles are detected, the light scatters and is detected by the sensor. Ionizing sensors, on the other hand, detect changes in air ionization caused by smoke. The duct smoke detector is installed directly in the duct.

As soon as the duct smoke detector has detected smoke, it sends a signal to the central fire alarm system, which then sounds the alarm. The alarm, in turn, is used to activate automatic fire protection measures such as triggering sprinkler systems or to initiate manual evacuation measures. Duct smoke detectors are therefore an important part of preventive fire protection in modern buildings.

Where are duct smoke detectors used?

Duct smoke detectors are typically used in buildings with extensive ventilation and air conditioning systems. However, they are also often indispensable in industrial environments.

Large buildings and commercial properties such as office buildings, shopping centers, hotels and other large commercial properties where extensive ventilation systems are in place.

Public facilitiesincluding hospitals, schools, universities, libraries and other public buildings where it is crucial to be able to react quickly in the event of a fire. Production and industrial facilitieswhere potentially hazardous materials are processed or stored. In larger residential complexes or high-rise buildingsthat use centralized ventilation systems. Underground facilities such as subway stations or parking garages where air is exchanged by ventilation systems.

What to look out for when buying a duct smoke detector?

When buying a duct smoke detector, there are some important points to consider to ensure that the device works effectively and reliably:

Certification and standards

Make sure that the duct smoke detector is certified in accordance with the relevant safety and quality standards. In Germany, the devices must comply with specific standards.

Sensor type

Decide whether an optical or ionizing sensor in a duct smoke detector is suitable for your specific application. Optical sensors are generally better at detecting visible smoke, while ionizing sensors can be more effective at detecting flame smoke.

Sensitivity and response behavior

The sensitivity of the smoke detector minimizes false alarms and at the same time ensures that real smoke is detected at an early stage. Some models come with adjustable sensitivity levels or adaptive.
